| Dear Colleagues, The XIV Summer School of Theoretical Nuclear Physics will take place in Itaipava, close to Petrópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, from January 25th to 31st 2009, at the Centro General Ernani Ayrosa ( www.cgea.eb.mil.br ). The school will present four advanced courses, two introductory courses and six seminars, as well as a poster section for the participants. The advanced courses will treat current topics in nuclear physics being developed by research groups in Brazil and on the international research frontier in the area. The first two advanced courses will discuss topics in low-energy nuclear physics, such as the structure and formation of exotic nuclei (CA1) and new general aspects of nuclear structure (CA2). The other two advanced courses will explore topics in high-energy nuclear physics: formation of the quark-gluon plasma and the physics of quarks and exotic hadrons (CA3 and CA4). These courses are intended for graduate students already involved in their thesis work, as well as researchers interested in working in one of these subareas or in obtaining up-to-date information on these topics. The introductory courses on nuclear reactions (CF1) and the physics of hadrons (CF2) offer to graduate students initiating their work in nuclear physics the opportunity to obtain more information about these two fundamental themes of scientific research in the area. The seminars were chosen so as to present the most recent lines of research in development by different groups in Brazil. The organizers attempted to choose lecturers of renowned scientific competency with good teaching ability, with the courses to be presented in the following format: (a) a first class introducing the fundamental concepts and an introductory discussion on principal developments in the area; (b) a final class directed towards the frontier and current challenges of the theme; (c) presentation of questions and problems to be discussed in afternoon sections. Undergraduate students involved in a Scientific Initiation program can be accepted if they work on topics related to those of the School. Foreign graduate students that want to participate in the school should contact the organizing committee before submitting an application form Organizing
