Patterns, Templates and Ordering in Thin Films:
From Magnetic Garnets to Polymer Films and Beyond

Abstract
--------

The phenomenology of domain shapes and patterns as observed in a wide
variety of two- and three-dimensional systems will be briefly reviewed.
Emphasis is given to a point of view attributing these phenomena to
competing interactions which stabilize states characterized by periodic
spatial variations of the pertinent order parameter field. Aspects of this
simple picture have been rediscovered in many separate areas of chemistry
and physics and it has been invoked to account for domain formation in a
wide range of physical, chemical and even biological systems such as
magnetic garnet films, ferrofluids, dipolar Langmuir monolayers,
amphiphilic vesicles, and thin films of block copolymers. I will, in
particular, discuss recent theoretical modelling of ordering mechanisms in
thin films of diblock copolymers and review their technological
importance. Chemically patterned surfaces will be shown to induce complex
polymer film morphology. In addition, lamellar phases can be oriented in
presence of an externally applied electric field. Finally, new results
related to cubic-to-hexagonal phase transitions will be presented.
